While expecting my first child, there was no question of whether or not I would breastfeed. As a first-time expecting mama, motherhood seemed full of wonder and mystery. The only references I truly had were those of other mothers—each one personal, each one unique. Topics ranged from birthing positions to which diaper keeps baby driest at night. Although each mother had her very own opinion on these aforementioned topics, once the conversation turned towards feeding baby, there was one piece of advice they all shared—make sure you have baby formula on hand…just in case you can’t make enough milk.

Even though my intentions to exclusively breastfeed were resolute, in the back of my mind I had doubts. After all, the vast majority of my friends had difficulties maintaining milk supply. Why would I be any different? Thanks to my two doulas and their thorough support, my breastfeeding journey was every bit as wondrous as I hoped. I exclusively breastfed and never had to use the baby formula I bought…just in case I couldn’t make enough milk.

The empowerment my two doulas gave me included knowledge on feeding positions, recognizing baby's feeding cues, boosting my nutrition, and giving me and baby ample amounts of grace during our breastfeeding journey. Their dedication and support in educating me on the complexities of breastfeeding was critical to me realizing my body’s potential to nourish my first child, until he decided to wean at 28 months!

Now, my breastfeeding journey resumes with my second child. This time, I decided against having baby formula on standby. Instead, I gleaned to the hallmarks of successful breastfeeding, such as, feeding on demand, consuming healthful meals/snacks, increasing my water intake, and (most challenging of all) designating copious amounts of time for rest!

Motherhood, in all its splendor, is the most beautiful of roles. This, however, does not mean it’s easy. It is for this reason I founded Mama Leche Lactation Delights, LLC.
