F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
Will Mama Leche help me produce more milk?
- Milk production is a culmination of many factors. Our products are not magic bullets. However, consuming Mama Leche cookie bars and herbal teas along with consistent feedings or pumping sessions will improve your supply. Results may vary because we all react differently to the same substances. Consulting a lactation consultant is your best means of ensuring success in your breastfeeding journey.
I already produce enough milk. Why should I consider using your product?
- Congratulations, mama! Your body is performing at its best. Helping mamas produce ample amounts of milk per feeding is Mama Leche's primary goal. However, breastfeeding goes through ebbs and flows where you may find yourself at times making lots of milk, and then not enough at other times. Hormones play a large part in our milk production. Keeping your health at optimum levels will ensure you and baby have a successful breastfeeding experience. Ingredients used in Mama Leche's products facilitate optimal health. So, whether you are an over-producer or not, you can benefit from the nutritious elements of our cookie bars and herbal teas.
Are your products safe for expecting mothers?
- No. We do not recommend pregnant women consume our products while expecting. Some of our ingredients contain compounds that may cause the uterus to contract. This type of stress has the potential to cause an accidental miscarriage. Please consult a healthcare professional before consuming any herbal supplement, especially when pregnant.
Can my husband and kids eat your cookie bars?
- Shh...While Mama Leche Boobie Bars and Crunchy Mama Granola Bars are formulated with breastfeeding mamas in mind, they are perfectly suitable for everyone and anyone. Although men do have mammary glands, they lack the prolactin levels to lactate. The odds of him lactating are next to none. In a nutshell, your whole family can enjoy our products which possess a host of nutrients without artificial flavoring or coloring. Don't worry...we'll keep this secret just between us!
Is it more important for my newborn to sleep through the night, or should I be waking her up for feedings?
- As a new mama, getting copious amounts of sleep can sometimes be elusive. While most mamas would prefer enjoying a night of uninterrupted sleep, the physiology of their newborn may not warrant an 8-hour sleep cycle. A 10-day-old newborn's stomach is about the size of a ping-pong ball. The tiny size of their stomach requires frequent feedings and just as many diaper changes. It would benefit both you and your baby to keep the aforementioned in mind while making a decision on this matter.
If I choose not to night feed, will this affect my milk supply?
- Choosing to not breastfeed through the night may cause your milk supply to drop. The level of prolactin (the hormone that signals the breasts to make milk) is higher during night feedings. Good nutrition is only partly responsible for successful breastfeeding. Frequent and consistent feedings are also critical to the equation.
What is a galactagogue?
-
This daunting word comes from the Greek root word “galacta,” meaning "produces milk." It is a substance that increases the body's ability to lactate. They are most commonly consumed in herbal form, such as teas and supplements. However, specific foods also contain properties which stimulate the mammary glands and increase prolactin. It is important to take into account that much of the evidence of galactagogues increasing a mama's milk supply are mostly anecdotal.
What galactagogues are prevalent in your products?
-
Our galactagogues come in herbal and food form. Check out our Key Ingredient page for more information.
Is the amount of milk my baby gets breastfeeding the same as the amount of milk I express from pumping?
-
No machine can compete with your baby's propensity to draw milk from your breast. Breastfeeding is more than just the quantity you produce. Your physiological response to your baby's suckling is different from how you respond to a mechanical device. In short, pumping in between feedings is ideal in order to promote milk supply. However, it would be a pity to reduce breastfeeding to only how many ounces of milk you have stocked in your freezer. The bonding of skin-to-skin feedings with your precious one is unmatched.
What breastfeeding resources are available in Tennessee?
-

The state is teeming with organizations which provide services and education regarding breastfeeding efficiently, effectively, and safely. PRODUCT
Do all your products have fenugreek?
-
Some mamas may have aversions to fenugreek, which causes irritation in their stomachs and bowels. Then, there are those who simply do not enjoy the taste. Although fenugreek is a prominent galactagogue used in our ingredients, not all of our products contain fenugreek. You may prefer our Crunchy Mama Granola Bars, instead. They contain no fenugreek. A selection of our herbal teas are also fenugreek-free.
Does your product contain sugar?
-
Yes. Our boobie bars and granola bars contain honey (locally-sourced in Tennessee), raw sugar, and brown sugar.
Are your products gluten-free?
-
No. At this time we do not have gluten-free options. However, we are certainly exploring the possibility.
Do all products contain dairy?
-
All baked goods contain dairy.
- Our herbal teas do not contain dairy.
Do all of your products contain nuts?
-
All of our baked goods have either peanuts, nuts, and/or tree nuts. The only exception is our Au Naturel granola bar, which has pine nuts (which is not a nut, but a seed), sesame seeds, coconut, and flax seeds. However, if you have allergies to nuts, we do not recommend you consume our products. All of our baked goods and teas are prepared in a facility which handles ingredients containing nuts.
- The majority of our herbal teas are nut-free. However, please read product descriptions to verify ingredients.
What are the serving sizes and suggestions for preparation of your teas?
-
All of our teas are specifically handcrafted with busy moms in mind. We understand that free time comes at a premium when you are a new mom. This is why we offer 100% muslin cotton biodegradable unbleached tea sachets, which make 32 fluid ounces or 4 cups per serving. Depending on individual taste, the ratio of tea to water will greatly correlate to the degree of strength you desire from the tea.
STORAGE
How do I store your products for optimal results?
-
Our boobie bars and granola bars are best consumed at room temperature. However, we advise you place them both in the refrigerator immediately upon receiving. Once you are ready to consume, set them out long enough to reach room temperature. If the bars are not consumed within 2 weeks, place them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
-
Herbal teas have a much longer shelf life. Our tea blends should be stored in an area with little to no sunlight. With careful and secure storage practices, your teas should maintain integrity for 6 to 12 months.
